Photodynamic therapy (PDT), is a form of phototherapy involving light and a photosensitizing chemical, used in conjunction with molecular oxygen to elicit cell death. PDT with blue light has the proven ability to kill microbes, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. Considered to be an ultra-effective “photofacial,” PDT has been show to be effective in treating severe acne, large pores, sun damage, skin texture, age spots, rosacea, and pre-cancerous lesions.
PDT is administered with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan. Levulan is a 20% Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), a substance that is found naturally in the human body. Our dermatologists then activate the pre-treated area with simultaneous wavelengths of BLU-U® light and intense pulsed light. This treatment is ideal for patients with moderate to severe acne who prefer not to go on Accutane.
