Liposonix Procedure: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Liposonix?

The Liposonix treatment is a non-surgical, non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy (HIFU) to permanently destroy fat cells.

Q: Does it work? What are the results?

Yes. In properly selected patients and with our proprietary treatment protocols, we see meaningful results in at least 90% of the treatments. While these results vary, both clinical studies and our experience have shown typical waistline reduction of about one dress or pant size (1 inch or 2.5 cm). Aesthetic outcomes have been very good for patients who have maintained a healthy lifestyle after the procedure.

Q: Who is a good candidate?

Patient selection is important: our clinical experience has been that Liposonix works best for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) of fat to lose in their abdomen or flanks. We find that patients who are close to their ideal weight have the best results. Liposonix can be performed on people of all skin colors.

Q: How long has Liposonix been available?

The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and testing behind its development. It has a well-defined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. Treatments have been available in Europe, Japan, and Canada for several years. It became available in the US in December 2011. Dr. Chapas was one of the first physicians in the US to use this technology and continues to be a leader in its development and implementation

Q: How does Liposonix work?

A: The Liposonix treatment uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy. It is the same energy source as diagnostic ultrasound, but it is designed to very precisely target specific areas with high energy to heat and destroy fat cells.

Q: How long is the treatment?

A: Typically a Liposonix treatment of the abdomen and flanks is completed in about one hour. This may vary depending on the treatment area and your specific needs. Patients arrive one hour prior to their treatment to receive pre-medication, complete consent forms, and undergo pre-treatment photographs and measurements.

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: Fat is permanently destroyed in a single treatment. Several patients have undergone a second treatment 3 months after the original treatment to achieve further fat reduction.

Q: Will Liposonix leave saggy folds in my skin?

A: This is unlikely. The Liposonix treatment does not produce the saggy skin that may result from surgical liposuction procedures. Liposonix should not be performed on people with severe skin laxity and for patients with mild skin laxity it can be combined with skin tightening procedures such as Thermage.

Q: Will the result be uneven or lumpy looking?

A: Unlike many liposuction procedures, the Liposonix treatment produces smooth results due to its unique, scanning delivery technology. We have not seen cases of uneven or lumpy results either in our clinical experience with the device or in the literature.

Q: Will Liposonix raise my cholesterol?

A: Large scale trials have shown that although Liposonix stimulates the break down of fat in the treated area, the cholesterol level in the blood is maintained at normal levels after treatment.

Q: What areas can be treated with Liposonix?

A: Liposonix received FDA clearance for treatment on the abdomen and flanks. We are currently investigating its use on the upper thighs as part of a clinical trial.

Q: When do the results appear, and how long do they last?

A: Most people see maximum results in 8 to 12 weeks. This is how long it takes for the body to naturally metabolize the destroyed fat tissue. The targeted cells are permanently destroyed, but surrounding fat cells can grow–the best way to maintain results is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. .

Q: What will I look like immediately after the procedure?

A: Liposonix is non-invasive thus there is little to no downtime, and you can resume your regular activities right away. Bruising from heating of the blood vessels between the fat cells is quite common and typically appears 1-2 days after the treatment. For most patients this resolves within 2 weeks.

Q: Does it hurt?

A: As with most aesthetic treatments, patients may experience a range of responses to treatment. Some patients feel only mild sensations during Liposonix treatment while others can be in significant discomfort. We have developed our own treatment protocols to alleviate discomfort, and we employ a variety of pain management strategies that we customize to each patient. There is no discomfort after the treatment ends.

Q: Who performs the procedure?

A: For your safety Dr. Chapas and Dr. Macgregor perform all our Liposonix treatments and personally operate the device throughout the procedure.

Q: Can I get Liposonix instead of liposuction?

A: The Liposonix treatment can help you lose one dress or pant size without surgery, but it won’t produce the same dramatic fat reduction associated with surgical liposuction. Our physicians would be happy to discuss the different approaches to fat reduction with you during your consultation.

Q: Can I get Liposonix if I’ve already had other procedures?

A: If you have had surgery or have scars in the treatment area, Liposonix may not be right for you. We encourage you to come in for a consultation so we can talk about the best options for your specific situation.

Q: How much does the Liposonix procedure cost?

A: The cost depends on the area you are having treated. During your consultation a treatment plan will be developed and you will be given a written quote based on that plan.
