What is AviClear?
Acne affects nearly all people at some point in their lives, can be difficult to treat, and can leave permanent scarring and psychological effects. Topical prescriptions and oral pills can be difficult to maintain and can have unwanted side effects. AviClear is the first FDA-cleared energy device designed to specifically treat mild, moderate, and severe inflamed and cystic acne lesions at the source- the oil gland. The treatment emits wavelengths of laser light that target the sebaceous (oil) glands to reduce sebum production. By decreasing your skin’s sebum production, you’re less likely to experience acne following treatment. This treatment is safe for all skin types and ages and can be used to treat acne on the face and the body.

Why Choose UnionDerm for AviClear Treatments?
UnionDerm was one of the first practices in New York City to offer AviClear when it launched in 2022. All our UnionDerm board-certified dermatologists are highly trained in the treatment of acne and are thrilled to offer AviClear to treat this very common skin condition. Additionally, Dr. Ugonabo has extensively pursued research involving the mental health of acne patients; and Dr. Chapas has spoken as an AviClear expert at the annual conference for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS).
Who is a Candidate for AviClear?
Individuals of all ages and skin tones with mild to severe active acne who struggle to achieve clear skin can benefit from AviClear treatments. This treatment is designed to treat acne of all types, including inflammatory, hormonal, and cystic. However, those who are pregnant, have certain types of rosacea, or have skin cancer should not undergo this treatment. If you are struggling to achieve acne-free skin, contact our office today to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists to determine if AviClear is right for you.
What Can I Expect with AviClear?
The AviClear device contains a cooling tip that helps make the treatment more comfortable for patients. It typically doesn’t require anesthetic, and it’s generally well tolerated. The skin will first be cleansed and then the laser will be applied directly to the acne-affected areas. A slight warming sensation may be felt.
Most patients require three treatments spaced one month apart, with treatments usually lasting about 30 minutes. The treatment has minimal downtime and aftercare consists of diligent sunscreen application. You may experience some skin purging a week or two weeks after treatment.
