Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into and under the skin to help diminish facial lines, restore volume and fullness, enhance shallow contours, plump thin lips, improve the appearance of recessed scars, and restore volume to the hands. There has been significant innovation in dermal filler techniques in recent years, including the introduction of several new products on the market.

Our Board-Certified Dermatologists are experts in injectable procedures and peer-to-peer trainers for the top dermal filler brands. They each have treated thousands of filler patients and teach dermatologists across the nation proper selection, dosage and placement for the best, most natural results. Our dermatologists have been featured in publications like The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Allure Magazine for their safe and natural results for treatments like tear trough filler and lip filler. Lastly, we are often invited to be clinical trial investigators for FDA indication approvals, such as the 2019 mid-cheek cannula approval for Restalyne Lyft.

Each type of filler works in a slightly different way, and our dermatologists select one depending on what your specific concerns are during your New Patient Consultation. You might need a variety of fillers during the same treatment session to correct different concerns. Finer lines, for example, call for a softer, thinner hyaluronic acid filler such as Volbella. Deeper wrinkles (like nasolabial folds, also known as smile lines) on the other hand, require thicker fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm. There are also volumizing fillers that are much denser and more robust to correct volume loss in the mid-face, jawline, and temples. The most popular substances used as dermal filler are hyaluronic acids, which are natural sugars already present in your body. They bind water in the skin, causing a plumping effect. As they restore this fullness, the skin appears tighter and suppler.

We offer a large variety of dermal filler options to customize treatment for our patients, including but not limited to:

  • Restylane can be used for fine lines and is a versatile filler. We have developed our own proprietary techniques and injection strategies to achieve subtle but cosmetically pleasing results.
  • Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Ultra Plus are used to fill fine and deep wrinkles, respectively. Juvéderm is the only hyaluronic acid filler that has been FDA approved to last up to 1 year after a single injection.
  • Juvéderm Voluma is an FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the mid-face and can be used to fill and lift the mid-face and cheeks and to reduce nasolabial folds. Studies have shown that with optimal treatment, results can last up to 2 years.
  • Belotero is FDA-approved to temporarily smooth out and fill in moderate to- severe nasolabial folds (the folds or wrinkles that go from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth).
  • Radiesse is a biostimulator that can help the body build its own collagen in addition to adding volume to the injection site, and helps correct deep wrinkles and folds.
  • Sculptra is a longer-lasting alternative for individuals with more significant volume loss.

Filler Facts:

Fillers can be used both preventatively for future lines and for treating existing lines.

Aging gracefully is a marathon, not a race. A study published in the Archives of Dermatologyfound that injections of Restylane led to increased collagen production, even after the filler had been metabolized. Preventative filler, started earlier in your late-twenties or thirties, can help slow the aging process significantly.

Fillers should achieve a natural, youthful look.

As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat while the skin loses collagen and elastin. You can see the effects of this loss through wrinkle formation and a decrease in facial volume. Fillers restore what was lost in the aging process, providing the underlying support that the skin had in its youth, as well as a better structure to the skin surface.

Despite the popularity of big, dramatic lips or overfilled cheeks in the media, we believe overdone filler injections imbalance a patient’s face and cause patients to look unnaturally distorted. Our doctors pride themselves on their natural aesthetic and strive to achieve balanced, effortless-looking results. Our goal is for you to leave the practice looking subtly refreshed and lifted.

Fillers have varying periods of time that they last.

The duration of results varies from product to product and patient to patient, but it ranges from six months to over a year or two. Some research shows—and we have seen this in our patients as well—that repeated injections may help stimulate the body’s own natural production of collagen.

Patients should also understand that the effects of most fillers can easily be reversed. We can dissolve fillers containing hyaluronic acid, such as Restylane and Juvédermwith an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Filler treatments should not be painful.

While the perception of pain is always individual, the majority of patients experience only mild discomfort. Our dermatologists’ priorities are the safety and comfort of our patients. That means we are always looking for new technologies and techniques that provide a more comfortable treatment experience, such as:

  • Topical Anesthetic Cream: We apply topical numbing cream for all filler patients, when medically appropriate.
  • Lidocaine: Some types of fillers offered at USLD are formulated with lidocaine, the most commonly-used anesthetic, to reduce injection discomfort.
  • Cannulas: These blunt tip needles slide through the skin layers, rather than cutting through tissue and vessels like traditional sharp needles. With less tissue damage and improved maneuverability, filler injections with blunt tip cannulas are performed with less pain and less bruising.
  • Vein Finder: AccuVein is a vein finder light that allows us to easily detect, map and avoid veins that are undetectable to the human eye. It can guide us in our injections, particularly in delicate areas of the face like the tear trough, nasolabial folds and lips, that are more prone to bruising. By optimizing site selection, healing happens much quicker.
  • Pro Nox: For patients extremely sensitive to injectables, we offer a nitrous oxide inhalant anesthesia that is akin to a laughing gas at the dentist.

You should always see an experienced, Board-Certified Dermatologist for filler.

In general, hyaluronic based fillers are well tolerated with minimal side effects including bruising and swelling. Even though the risks related to fillers are minimal, serious risks do exist. This is why you should only ever have fillers injected by a board-certified dermatologist who has had ongoing, specialized training in facial anatomy to ensure optimal results.
