MIRIA™

What is MIRIA™?

MIRIA™ is a groundbreaking smart laser technology tailored for highly personalized skin renewal. Employing Focal Point Technology™, MIRIA™ precisely delivers laser light energy to stimulate new collagen fibers while reducing damage to the surrounding tissue. Unlike many other laser skin resurfacing treatment options, MIRIA™ is also safe to use for all skin tones and types, including darker skin tones.

This advanced light-based 1550nm platform selectively targets water in the skin to induce coagulation and rejuvenation. The laser energy can be focused to specific depths in the skin based on what the patient needs for rejuvenation. It is the world’s most powerful nonablative laser and the only focused fractional laser treatment ever created.

While most commonly used for facial rejuvenation, MIRIA may also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, chest, hands, and more.

Why Choose UnionDerm for MIRIA™?

UnionDerm was one of the first practices in the country to offer MIRIA. Over the past year, we have worked closely the MIRIA team, evaluating and optimizing this treatment for patients. Our commitment to research means we can deliver safe, effective and transformative results—and best customize this treatment for each individual patient.

Who is a Candidate for MIRIA™?

Individuals who are starting to show signs of aging, such as facial wrinkles, or are looking for prejuvenation treatments may be great candidates for MIRIA™ laser skin resurfacing. Unlike other non-ablative laser treatments, MIRIA™ is not restricted by skin tone and can be used on all skin tones, including very dark skin, at effective energy. However, this treatment may not be right for those who are pregnant or nursing, who have active acne in the treatment area, have severe signs of aging such as moderately deep lines or excessive skin laxity, or who have a medical history of certain skin conditions. To learn if MIRIA™ is right for you, please contact our office to schedule a consultation appointment.

What Can I Expect from MIRIA™? Treatments?

The MIRIA™ treatment begins with the application of a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to ensure your comfort. MIRIA™ treatments take between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the treatment settings. During treatment, laser light energy is used to stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and tighten skin for a rejuvenated appearance.

The treatment regimen is customized to the individual patient, though most patients receive a series of 2 treatments spaced about a month apart.

There is usually some recovery time needed after treatment. As the skin heals, patients may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness on the treated skin, which typically resolves on their own within 24-72 hours.

Most patients will see skin improvement in their superficial epidermis within a week to two weeks after treatment. For deeper treatments, final results may take months as collagen and elastin, the building blocks of healthy, vibrant skin, undergo remodeling.

To best ensure clear, smooth skin, patients should limit sun exposure to the treated area and always wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30.

MIRIA Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs

What is the difference between MIRA fractionated non-ablative laser and CO2 laser treatments?

As a non-ablative laser treatment, MIRIA offers its own unique benefits over ablative laser resurfacing such as Co2 laser treatments. Since the skin surface remains largely intact with MIRIA laser resurfacing, downtime is minimal—often no more than a few days. You may experience some redness or swelling, but it typically resolves quickly. With Co2 laser resurfacing, treatment is more aggressive, so recovery is longer, usually about 1-2 weeks. You may experience redness, swelling, and peeling during the healing process.rnAt UnionDerm, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan from one of our board-certified dermatologists that best addresses their skin concerns, along with considering recover time as an important factor.

What are fractional lasers?

Fractional lasers are a type of laser treatment that targets only a fraction of the skin at a time, leaving small, untreated areas between the laser pulses. This approach allows for more precise treatment with quicker recovery compared to traditional lasers that treat the entire surface area of the skin. The MIRIA treatment is a type of fractional laser resurfacing.

What are ablative lasers vs. non-ablative lasers?

Ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers are two different categories of laser treatments used in cosmetic dermatology, primarily for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. The distinction lies in how they affect the skin and their level of invasiveness. Ablative lasers remove the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and can also penetrate into the deeper layers (dermis). Non-ablative lasers do not remove any skin layers. Instead, they heat the underlying layers of skin without damaging the surface.

What is the best laser skin resurfacing treatment, or laser peel, in New York?

There is no one laser resurfacing treatment that is best for everyone. Because each individual has unique aesthetic skin concerns, personalized treatment is necessary. At UnionDerm, we offer an array of laser skin resurfacing treatment options to address multiple issues, such as acne scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, irregular skin tone and texture, and more. Our laser treatments range from gentle fractional laser resurfacing to CO2 laser resurfacing, to fractionated laser resurfacing, and more. To learn more about which treatment is right for you, schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

Can I undergo laser resurfacing if I have cold sores?

If you are prone to cold sores, you can still undergo laser resurfacing, but taking precautions is essential. Laser treatments, particularly resurfacing, can sometimes trigger a cold sore outbreak because the procedure stimulates the skin and may stress the area where the virus is dormant. To minimize the risk of an outbreak, your dermatologist will likely prescribe an antiviral medication before and after the procedure.

RF Microneedling

What is RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure to address wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, lax skin, and more. RF microneedling adds the element of radiofrequency energy to the already stimulating traditional microneedling procedure.

During treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area. Then, the RF microneedling device, equipped with ultrafine needles, will create tiny wounds in the skin while simultaneously emitting radiofrequency energy. As these controlled injuries heal, they will trigger new collagen and elastin production deep in the skin to combat signs of skin aging and skin laxity for tighter skin. Compared to classic microneedling procedures, RF microneedling produces more dramatic results, quicker.

Why Choose UnionDerm for RF Microneedling?

The board-certified dermatologists at UnionDerm have collectively performed over 2,000 radiofrequency microneedling treatments since 2016. Unlike other facilities that may only offer one type of RF microneedling treatment, our physicians choose from one of five different devices to most effectively treat each individual patient based on their specific concerns.

Additionally, several of our physicians have participated in clinical studies evaluating new treatment indications for RF microneedling including a trial that evaluated the use of the Secret RF device to improve acne scarring and a Morpheus8 study that determined its usage to effectively treat mild-to-moderate cellulite.

Who is a Candidate for RF Microneedling?

An ideal candidate for this treatment is someone who is in good health and is seeking the treatment of early signs of aging. It is also a great option for individuals who are bothered by skin laxity due to weight loss from Semaglutide medications such as Ozempic or Wegovy. Because RF microneedling harnesses the body’s natural healing mechanisms to boost collagen production and tighten the skin, patients can enjoy tighter, smoother skin following microneedling.

Those who are pregnant or nursing, have a history of cold sores, hypertrophic scarring, or poor wound healing, or who have a severe skin disease may not be good candidates. To learn more about if this treatment is right for you, please schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

What Can I Expect with RF Microneedling?

At UnionDerm, we offer five cutting-edge RF microneedling devices for each patient’s unique aesthetic goals. These include:

Secret RF

Secret RF is a novel fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment designed to stimulate and remodel collagen. The treatment uses microneedles to deliver radiofrequency waves into varying levels of the skin, including the deeper layers of the dermis. The intensity of the device can be tailored to treat the skin at various depths or to suit different patients’ needs, including diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, scars, and stretch marks.

This minimally invasive treatment typically requires little to no downtime, so you can return to your normal activities quickly. Most patients can see results weeks after a single treatment, but to achieve optimal results, a series of treatments is often recommended. As with other microneedling procedures, patients may experience redness, dryness, or swelling after Secret RF.

Morpheus8

Morephus8 is a minimally invasive, deep fractional skin treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency. This combination stimulates collagen production by penetrating deeply into and heating layers of the dermis, triggering collagen production for tighter, smoother skin on both the face and body. The device’s modular tips allow the treatment to target areas large and small with minimal risk of hyperpigmentation. The device targets the deflation of soft tissue, including the jowls, as well as fine lines, cellulite, stretch marks, and acne scars.

During the treatment, the applicator passes over the skin of the affected area and penetrates the subdermal tissue, targeting areas of laxity or soft tissue. The device coagulates fat and contracts connective tissue to tighten and correct lines, marks, and wrinkles on the treated area.

EndyMed Intensif RF

The EndyMed Intensif RF Microneedle system combines microneedling and radiofrequency technology to reach deeper layers of skin and improve overall skin texture. The highly precise treatment transmits heat into the skin to trigger a healing response, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles, acne, and scarring for all skin types.

EndyMed Intensif RF is minimally invasive and requires little downtime. The treatment differs from traditional microneedling in a few ways: EndyMed Intensif’s gold-plated tapered microneedles require fewer passes over the skin’s surface, meaning a shorter session time, and the microneedles are much smaller, resulting in minimal discomfort.

Potenza

Potenza is a versatile radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device safe for all skin types. RF energy heats the underlying layers, stimulating the tightening of skin through the stimulation of elastin and collagen. Because the RF energy is delivered so deeply into the tissues, it can create quicker, more dramatic results. Potenza can also perform RF microneedling with an infusion tip designed to drive topicals into the skin for even more dramatic results.

Profound

The Profound treatment is a non-surgical option for treating facial wrinkles and the appearance of cellulite. It combines radiofrequency (RF) energy with microneedles to transform your skin from within, triggering collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production.

EMFACE

What is EMFACE?

EMFACE is a highly innovative procedure used to refine and sculpt the face. This non-invasive treatment reduces the need for needles or downtime. EMFACE combines synchronized radiofrequency with HIFES™ (high-intensity facial electrical stimulation). The synchronized radiofrequency heats the skin’s dermis to boost collagen and elastin production while the HIFES™ technology contracts specific facial muscles. The results of the EMFACE treatment are a sculpted, tightened, and toned face.

Why Choose UnionDerm for EMFACE?

In preparation of an EMFACE treatment, the precise placement of the EMFACE applicators is critical to ensuring proper and effective treatment.  At UnionDerm, our board-certified dermatologists are highly trained in the anatomy of the face, thus ensuring a safe, effective treatment. Additionally, as a leading practice in clinical research and development, EMFACE has partnered with UnionDerm to conduct research on new uses for the EMFACE device, enabling our physicians to have first-hand experience with the EMFACE technology. We are also one of the first practices in NYC to offer the new EMFACE submentum treatment for the chin area.

Who is a Candidate for EMFACE?

Candidates for EMFACE include individuals wanting to address signs of aging, such as loss of facial muscle tone and loss of collagen. Candidates must be in good health and have no active skin infections during treatment. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for EMFACE is through a private consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists at UnionDerm.

What Can I Expect from EMFACE Treatments?

During your EMFACE treatment, you can expect the HIFES technology to contract your muscles with an electric current. This will help strengthen and sculpt your facial tissue while the radiofrequency heat prompts wound healing, increasing collagen and elastin production. Both proteins allow the skin to appear firm, strong, and tight.

Your EMFACE treatment will take around 25 minutes in total. First, your skin will be cleansed, and then the treatment applicators will be placed on your treatment areas, allowing the treatment to begin. To see the best results, it is recommended that you complete four sessions, each scheduled a week apart.

What Areas Can EMFACE Treat?

EMFACE is well known for addressing the appearance of facial wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of facial volume. This non-invasive skin procedure can lift, volumize, and minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. EMFACE can treat multiple areas of the face, including:

    • Submentum/Chin
    • Cheeks
    • Forehead

ELLACOR

What is Ellacor?

Ellacor is an FDA-cleared, first-of-its-kind device that significantly tightens and smooths moderate to severe wrinkles and sagging skin on the cheeks, jaw, and jowls through innovative micro-coring technology. This cutting-edge technology removes micro-portions of lax, excess skin, improving the appearance of common signs of aging for tighter, more youthful skin.

Why Choose UnionDerm for Ellacor?

As a premier cosmetic dermatology group and skin rejuvenation center, UnionDerm was one of the very first practices in NYC (and across the country) to offer Ellacor.

Training with Dr. Anderson, Dr. Chopra was one of the first physicians in the world to use the Ellacor device and has already performed over 100 procedures. Along with Dr. Chapas, he continues to work with Cytrellis, the parent company of Ellacor, optimizing future generations of the device.

Who is a Candidate for Ellacor?

Healthy individuals with moderate to severe wrinkles and loose skin on the mid to lower face can often benefit from Ellacor treatments. It is also a great option for those who would like to rejuvenate their facial appearance without surgery, with fewer associated risks and less recovery time. AVICLEAR

What is AviClear?

Acne affects nearly all people at some point in their lives, can be difficult to treat, and can leave permanent scarring and psychological effects. Topical prescriptions and oral pills can be difficult to maintain and can have unwanted side effects.  AviClear is the first FDA-cleared energy device designed to specifically treat mild, moderate, and severe inflamed and cystic acne lesions at the source- the oil gland. The treatment emits wavelengths of laser light that target the sebaceous (oil) glands to reduce sebum production. DERMA V

What is DermaV?:

DermaV is a laser treatment that utilizes two wavelengths to target brown and red skin discoloration simultaneously. The device delivers laser energy that’s converted into heat in your blood vessels. That heat contracts your blood vessels, fading their appearance. It’s effective for reducing vascular skin concerns like redness, rosacea, flushing, and spider veins. DermaV also fades age spots, birthmarks, and freckles. The laser has controlled heating to target those spots without damaging the top layers of your skin.

What can I expect with DermaV?:

Each treatment can range from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on what you’re targeting. The pain level varies patient-to-patient and also depends on the treatment area. You might feel a little discomfort during a treatment—like a rubber band softly snapping against your skin, but the cooling element helps reduce any pain. Some patients will see results after one treatment and others may require multiple sessions.

DERMASWEEP

What is DermaSweep?:

DermaSweep is a next-level micro-resurfacing treatment that uses a gentle bristle tip to exfoliate the top layer of skin and target a multitude of skin concerns, including acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of aging. According to data collected from clinical trials, DermaSweep is safe for sensitive or reactive skin and delivers noticeable results in as little as a single treatment.

DermaSweep improves skin texture and increases radiance by stimulating the renewal of collagen production and encouraging lymphatic drainage. The combination treatment doesn’t just exfoliate, but also allows physicians to infuse the skin with useful nutrients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C to fit patients’ unique needs. There are many infusion formulas available, including the “Red Carpet” infusion, which evens tone and boosts the skin’s overall glow.

What can I expect with DermaSweep?:

DermaSweep is a painless, 30-minute treatment without downtime. It can be done in a three-part series, though results are often visible after a single visit. Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, DermaSweep does not use crystals, therefore eliminating the irritation or inflammation that comes with embedded debris. The treatment allows the physician to adjust the aggression of the suction-like exfoliating bristle to fit the patient’s level of sensitivity.

DermaSweep is approved for use on the face, including the eye area, as well as the neck and décolletage, both of which are often subject to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and signs of age. The treatment is also approved for use on the hands and arms—DermaSweep can diminish the appearance of Keratosis pilaris in this area in particular. Consult with your physician when deciding which areas to try DermaSweep.

The physician may also suggest infusing the device with nutrients based on the patient’s needs—these nutrients include hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, humectants, and more.

Afterward, the patient may experience mild tightness or tingling, as with any exfoliation, but the skin will likely feel smoother and feel more refreshed.

CLEAR + BRILLIANT
(+ COMPLETE)

What is Clear + Brilliant®?

The Clear + Brilliant® laser is FDA-approved and optimized for preventing and addressing early signs of aging including skin texture, firmness, elasticity, and pore-size appearance. It has been one of our favorite energy devices as it provides less invasive and affordable treatments with minimal downtime that can be preventative as well as restorative. Several patients notice improved skin appearance and a “glow” almost immediately, and it is a great introductory laser for patients who do not need more intensive treatments or want to avoid downtime.

This treatment works by creating micro-thermal zones in the skin, stimulating new collagen production for overall skin rejuvenation. Clear + Brilliant is a great option to address skin concerns such as early signs of aging, uneven skin tone and texture, sun damage, large pores, and more.

The Permea treatment combines the Clear and Brilliant laser with a topical antioxidant treatment. The special Permea handpiece is optimized for brighter, more even skin tone and enhanced skin permeability.

Why Choose UnionDerm for Clear + Brilliant® Treatments?

All of our physicians have been using Clear + Brilliant since their cosmetic fellowships and trainings, and are long-time experts in the use of the device. We are currently participating in two clinical trials that are examining the safety and effectiveness of Clear + Brilliant to treat the neck and chest area and another that’s looking at the Permea portion of the Clear + Brilliant System to treat melasma. We are pioneers in combining Clear + Brilliant with other treatments such as photodynamic therapy. Our combination treatment on the chest was shown to improve the skin appearance on the chest more than photodynamic therapy alone.

Who is a Candidate for Clear + Brilliant®?

Patients who wish to prevent early signs of aging can often benefit from Clear + Brilliant treatments. Common concerns addressed with this treatment include uneven skin tone and texture, large pores, and sun damage. This treatment is safe for all skin types and tones. However, it may not be ideal for those with certain skin conditions such as actinic keratosis, melasma, rosacea, and psoriasis. To learn if you are a candidate for Clear + Brilliant, please contact our office today to schedule a consultation.

What Can I Expect with Clear + Brilliant®?

This non-invasive and gentle treatment is ideal for individuals of all skin types. A topical numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort. Our medical professional will then gently guide the Clear + Brilliant® handpiece across the target area and actively treat your skin, creating microscopic treatment zones, for approximately 15-20 minutes. Patients may experience a well-tolerated heating sensation.

Following treatment, minor redness and swelling may occur, which usually resolves within an hour. It is important that patients follow the instructions provided to them by our team following their laser energy treatment to ensure optimal results. This may involve avoiding sun damage due to sun exposure with the use of sunscreen and protective clothing. Makeup can be applied following treatment to cover redness if desired.

Most patients can begin to notice a visible improvement in their skin within a few days of treatment and greater improvement with a series of treatments. Results will continue to improve over the next couple of months as collagen continues to generate, resulting in a healthy glow and younger-looking skin.
