What is MIRIA™?

MIRIA™ is a groundbreaking smart laser technology tailored for highly personalized skin renewal. Employing Focal Point Technology™, MIRIA™ precisely delivers laser light energy to stimulate new collagen fibers while reducing damage to the surrounding tissue. Unlike many other laser skin resurfacing treatment options, MIRIA™ is also safe to use for all skin tones and types, including darker skin tones.

This advanced light-based 1550nm platform selectively targets water in the skin to induce coagulation and rejuvenation. The laser energy can be focused to specific depths in the skin based on what the patient needs for rejuvenation. It is the world’s most powerful nonablative laser and the only focused fractional laser treatment ever created.

While most commonly used for facial rejuvenation, MIRIA may also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, chest, hands, and more.

Why Choose UnionDerm for MIRIA™?

UnionDerm was one of the first practices in the country to offer MIRIA. Over the past year, we have worked closely the MIRIA team, evaluating and optimizing this treatment for patients. Our commitment to research means we can deliver safe, effective and transformative results—and best customize this treatment for each individual patient.

Who is a Candidate for MIRIA™?

Individuals who are starting to show signs of aging, such as facial wrinkles, or are looking for prejuvenation treatments may be great candidates for MIRIA™ laser skin resurfacing. Unlike other non-ablative laser treatments, MIRIA™ is not restricted by skin tone and can be used on all skin tones, including very dark skin, at effective energy. However, this treatment may not be right for those who are pregnant or nursing, who have active acne in the treatment area, have severe signs of aging such as moderately deep lines or excessive skin laxity, or who have a medical history of certain skin conditions. To learn if MIRIA™ is right for you, please contact our office to schedule a consultation appointment.

What Can I Expect from MIRIA™? Treatments?

The MIRIA™ treatment begins with the application of a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to ensure your comfort. MIRIA™ treatments take between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the treatment settings. During treatment, laser light energy is used to stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and tighten skin for a rejuvenated appearance.

The treatment regimen is customized to the individual patient, though most patients receive a series of 2 treatments spaced about a month apart.

There is usually some recovery time needed after treatment. As the skin heals, patients may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness on the treated skin, which typically resolves on their own within 24-72 hours.

Most patients will see skin improvement in their superficial epidermis within a week to two weeks after treatment. For deeper treatments, final results may take months as collagen and elastin, the building blocks of healthy, vibrant skin, undergo remodeling.

To best ensure clear, smooth skin, patients should limit sun exposure to the treated area and always wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30.

MIRIA Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs

What is the difference between MIRA fractionated non-ablative laser and CO2 laser treatments?

As a non-ablative laser treatment, MIRIA offers its own unique benefits over ablative laser resurfacing such as Co2 laser treatments. Since the skin surface remains largely intact with MIRIA laser resurfacing, downtime is minimal—often no more than a few days. You may experience some redness or swelling, but it typically resolves quickly. With Co2 laser resurfacing, treatment is more aggressive, so recovery is longer, usually about 1-2 weeks. You may experience redness, swelling, and peeling during the healing process.rnAt UnionDerm, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan from one of our board-certified dermatologists that best addresses their skin concerns, along with considering recover time as an important factor.

What are fractional lasers?

Fractional lasers are a type of laser treatment that targets only a fraction of the skin at a time, leaving small, untreated areas between the laser pulses. This approach allows for more precise treatment with quicker recovery compared to traditional lasers that treat the entire surface area of the skin. The MIRIA treatment is a type of fractional laser resurfacing.

What are ablative lasers vs. non-ablative lasers?

Ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers are two different categories of laser treatments used in cosmetic dermatology, primarily for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. The distinction lies in how they affect the skin and their level of invasiveness. Ablative lasers remove the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and can also penetrate into the deeper layers (dermis). Non-ablative lasers do not remove any skin layers. Instead, they heat the underlying layers of skin without damaging the surface.

What is the best laser skin resurfacing treatment, or laser peel, in New York?

There is no one laser resurfacing treatment that is best for everyone. Because each individual has unique aesthetic skin concerns, personalized treatment is necessary. At UnionDerm, we offer an array of laser skin resurfacing treatment options to address multiple issues, such as acne scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, irregular skin tone and texture, and more. Our laser treatments range from gentle fractional laser resurfacing to CO2 laser resurfacing, to fractionated laser resurfacing, and more. To learn more about which treatment is right for you, schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

Can I undergo laser resurfacing if I have cold sores?

If you are prone to cold sores, you can still undergo laser resurfacing, but taking precautions is essential. Laser treatments, particularly resurfacing, can sometimes trigger a cold sore outbreak because the procedure stimulates the skin and may stress the area where the virus is dormant. To minimize the risk of an outbreak, your dermatologist will likely prescribe an antiviral medication before and after the procedure.
