RF Microneedling

What is RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure to address wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, lax skin, and more. RF microneedling adds the element of radiofrequency energy to the already stimulating traditional microneedling procedure.

During treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area. Then, the RF microneedling device, equipped with ultrafine needles, will create tiny wounds in the skin while simultaneously emitting radiofrequency energy. As these controlled injuries heal, they will trigger new collagen and elastin production deep in the skin to combat signs of skin aging and skin laxity for tighter skin. Compared to classic microneedling procedures, RF microneedling produces more dramatic results, quicker.

Why Choose UnionDerm for RF Microneedling?

The board-certified dermatologists at UnionDerm have collectively performed over 2,000 radiofrequency microneedling treatments since 2016. Unlike other facilities that may only offer one type of RF microneedling treatment, our physicians choose from one of five different devices to most effectively treat each individual patient based on their specific concerns.

Additionally, several of our physicians have participated in clinical studies evaluating new treatment indications for RF microneedling including a trial that evaluated the use of the Secret RF device to improve acne scarring and a Morpheus8 study that determined its usage to effectively treat mild-to-moderate cellulite.

Who is a Candidate for RF Microneedling?

An ideal candidate for this treatment is someone who is in good health and is seeking the treatment of early signs of aging. Those who are pregnant or nursing, have a history of cold sores, hypertrophic scarring, or poor wound healing, or who have a severe skin disease may not be good candidates. To learn more about if this treatment is right for you, please schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

What Can I Expect with RF Microneedling?

At UnionDerm, we offer five cutting-edge RF microneedling devices for each patient’s unique aesthetic goals. These include:

Secret RF

Secret RF is a novel fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment designed to stimulate and remodel collagen. The treatment uses microneedles to deliver radiofrequency waves into varying levels of the skin, including the deeper layers of the dermis. The intensity of the device can be tailored to treat the skin at various depths or to suit different patients’ needs, including diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, scars, and stretch marks.

This minimally invasive treatment typically requires little to no downtime, so you can return to your normal activities quickly. Most patients can see results weeks after a single treatment, but to achieve optimal results, a series of treatments is often recommended. As with other microneedling procedures, patients may experience redness, dryness, or swelling after Secret RF.

Morephus8 is a minimally invasive, deep fractional skin treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency. This combination stimulates collagen production by penetrating deeply into and heating layers of the dermis, triggering collagen production for tighter, smoother skin on both the face and body. The device’s modular tips allow the treatment to target areas large and small with minimal risk of hyperpigmentation. The device targets the deflation of soft tissue, including the jowls, as well as fine lines, cellulite, stretch marks, and acne scars.

During the treatment, the applicator passes over the skin of the affected area and penetrates the subdermal tissue, targeting areas of laxity or soft tissue. The device coagulates fat and contracts connective tissue to tighten and correct lines, marks, and wrinkles on the treated area.

EndyMed Intensif RF

The EndyMed Intensif RF Microneedle system combines microneedling and radiofrequency technology to reach deeper layers of skin and improve overall skin texture. The highly precise treatment transmits heat into the skin to trigger a healing response, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles, acne, and scarring for all skin types.

EndyMed Intensif RF is minimally invasive and requires little downtime. The treatment differs from traditional microneedling in a few ways: EndyMed Intensif’s gold-plated tapered microneedles require fewer passes over the skin’s surface, meaning a shorter session time, and the microneedles are much smaller, resulting in minimal discomfort.

Potenza is a versatile radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device safe for all skin types. RF energy heats the underlying layers, stimulating the tightening of skin through the stimulation of elastin and collagen. Because the RF energy is delivered so deeply into the tissues, it can create quicker, more dramatic results. Potenza can also perform RF microneedling with an infusion tip designed to drive topicals into the skin for even more dramatic results.

The Profound treatment is a non-surgical option for treating facial wrinkles and the appearance of cellulite. It combines radiofrequency (RF) energy with microneedles to transform your skin from within, triggering collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production.

What is EMFACE?

EMFACE is a highly innovative procedure used to refine and sculpt the face. This non-invasive treatment reduces the need for needles or downtime. EMFACE combines synchronized radiofrequency with HIFES™ (high-intensity facial electrical stimulation). The synchronized radiofrequency heats the skin’s dermis to boost collagen and elastin production while the HIFES™ technology contracts specific facial muscles. The results of the EMFACE treatment are a sculpted, tightened, and toned face.

Why Choose UnionDerm for EMFACE?

In preparation of an EMFACE treatment, the precise placement of the EMFACE applicators is critical to ensuring proper and effective treatment.  At UnionDerm, our board-certified dermatologists are highly trained in the anatomy of the face, thus ensuring a safe, effective treatment. Additionally, as a leading practice in clinical research and development, EMFACE has partnered with UnionDerm to conduct research on new uses for the EMFACE device, enabling our physicians to have first-hand experience with the EMFACE technology. We are also one of the first practices in NYC to offer the new EMFACE submentum treatment for the chin area.

Who is a Candidate for EMFACE?

Candidates for EMFACE include individuals wanting to address signs of aging, such as loss of facial muscle tone and loss of collagen. Candidates must be in good health and have no active skin infections during treatment. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for EMFACE is through a private consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists at UnionDerm.

What Can I Expect from EMFACE Treatments?

During your EMFACE treatment, you can expect the HIFES technology to contract your muscles with an electric current. This will help strengthen and sculpt your facial tissue while the radiofrequency heat prompts wound healing, increasing collagen and elastin production. Both proteins allow the skin to appear firm, strong, and tight.

Your EMFACE treatment will take around 25 minutes in total. First, your skin will be cleansed, and then the treatment applicators will be placed on your treatment areas, allowing the treatment to begin. To see the best results, it is recommended that you complete four sessions, each scheduled a week apart.

What Areas Can EMFACE Treat?

EMFACE is well known for addressing the appearance of facial wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of facial volume. This non-invasive skin procedure can lift, volumize, and minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. EMFACE can treat multiple areas of the face, including:

    • Submentum/Chin
    • Cheeks
    • Forehead

What is Sofwave?

Sofwave is a non-invasive ultrasound device that stimulates collagen production in the dermis to tighten and correct excess skin laxity.

The gentle integrated cooling technique ensures no damage to the epidermis or to the underlying structures beneath the dermis. Not only is Sofwave safe for all skin tones and types, but the treatment is clinically proven to remodel collagen, improve facial lines, reduce wrinkles, and lift lax or loose skin.

Why Choose UnionDerm for Sofwave Treatments?

UnionDerm was one of the first practices in the country to offer Sofwave when it first launched in 2021. We currently offer Sofwave at all three of our locations: Union Square, Central Park, and Hamptons.

We have conducted multiple clinical trials with Sofwave to examine additional indications and treatments using their ultrasound technology. Our clinical trial to assess the Sofwave device for treating cellulite in the upper posterior thighs and buttocks led to their FDA clearance for short-term improvement in the appearance of cellulite by the Sofwave system. Our acne scarring study also helped Sofwave gain FDA clearance for the treatment of acne scars.

Who is a Candidate for Sofwave?

Ideal Software candidates are those with mild to moderate skin aging and skin laxity who desire to lift the brow or submental/neck area. This typically includes those in their 30s or older. Sofwave can also be used to tighten skin and improve skin laxity on areas of the body such as the abdomen, arms and buttocks. This treatment is safe for all skin types and tones. However, individuals who are pregnant and have implanted electrical devices in their bodies should not undergo this treatment. What is Thermage?

Thermage is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment that stimulates collagen production to improve skin laxity for a naturally younger appearance. The device safely applies radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of skin, which causes immediate contraction to tighten loose skin. This triggers a healing response, which produces increased collagen stimulation. Thermage treatment can reduce visible signs of aging and tighten the skin in the jowls, cheeks, neck, buttocks, extremities, abdomen, eyelids, hands, and abdomen for a younger-looking appearance.

Why Choose UnionDerm for Thermage Treatments?

We recognize that the knowledge and technique of the physician is a key factor in choosing your provider. The board-certified dermatologists at UnionDerm have collectively performed over 1,000 Thermage treatments. In particular, Dr. Chapas and Dr. MacGregor have extensive clinical experience with Thermage, going back to their work on clinical trials. Thermage can also work in combination with other treatments, depending on the desired result. Our comprehensive range of non-surgical skin laxity and contouring devices, combined with our expertise in administering these treatments, allows us to design the most highly personalized plan for each patient.

Who is a Candidate for Thermage?

Individuals with mild to moderate skin sagging on their neck, brow, eyelid, cheeks, or jowls can often benefit from Thermage treatments. Thermage can also be used to improve skin laxity on areas of the body including the arms, thighs and abdomen. You should not receive thermotherapy if you are pregnant or have a current skin infection in the treatment area. Individuals with severe facial sagging are likely to benefit from an alternative treatment. For more information regarding candidacy, please schedule a consultation appointment today

What Can I Expect with Thermage?

Thermage is a comfortable treatment and results in minimal downtime. During the treatment, the physician gently applies the handheld device onto the affected area. Patients may feel a brief heating sensation immediately followed by a cooling sensation as the adapter touches the skin. These temperature changes indicate the dermis is reacting to the tool’s heating properties to tighten existing collagen and create new collagen.

Temporary redness and minor swelling may occur following Thermage treatments. However, there is no downtime required and most patients return to their normal activities right away. The primary result of Thermage is tighter, more youthful-looking skin. Changes may be visible within days or weeks after treatment and will typically continue to improve up to six months after treatment. A single treatment is often all that is required, and a regular skincare regimen can help patients maintain their results for years to come.

What Areas Does Thermage Treat?

    • Abdomen
    • Cheeks + Jowls
    • Eyelids
    • Neck
    • Buttocks + Extremities
    • Hands

What is Ultherapy®?:

Ultherapy® is a system manufactured by Ulthera, Inc. that uses micro-focused ultrasound to tighten and lift skin. Ultherapy produces an image of the skin and underlying connective tissue so the physician can deliver targeted energy under the surface of the skin with the optimal depth, temperature and precision necessary to generate new collagen and to tighten and lift the skin.

What can I expect with Ultherapy®?:

Ultherapy stimulates collagen generation and tightens the connective tissue at a deeper level than other non-surgical treatments. This can result in higher eyebrows, a tighter jaw line, and smoother neck. Recent evidence shows efficacy for skin tightening in additional treatment sites such as the chest, abdomen, arms and knees.

Ultherapy received FDA approval in 2009 and is the only non-invasive procedure approved in the U.S. to lift skin on the lower face, neck and brow. Dr. Chapas, Dr. MacGregor, Dr. Chwalek, and Dr. Gmyrek have several years of experience with Ultherapy, and Dr. MacGregor was part of the clinical trials that led to FDA approval and is considered an international authority on Ultherapy. We were one of the first practices to offer the latest upgraded Ultherapy® system, which offers better results and improved patient comfort.

We have extensive experience with pain management for Ultherapy and are able to offer the highest possible level of patient comfort without compromising the procedure’s effectiveness. We continue working with Ulthera to refine our proprietary treatment protocols and to offer our patients the latest advances and software upgrades. In many situations Ultherapy works best in combination with other treatments, and our comprehensive range of non-surgical body contouring and skin laxity devices combined with our expertise in administering these treatments allows us to design the best personalized plan for each patient.

The Ultherapy system can be an excellent option for patients with mild to moderate laxity who aren’t ready for a surgical brow lift or a facelift as well as those who want to “stay ahead of the game”. It is generally suitable for all skin colors and treatment can be completed in a single 30-60 minute session with minimal ensuing downtime. The treatment initiates the lifting process, but the effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months, as tired collagen is replenished with new, stronger collagen. Further improvements can even appear up to six months following a procedure as this collagen-building process continues and patients gradually look more youthful and refreshed.

What areas does Ultherapy® treat?:

What are NovaThreads?:

NovaThreads are synthetic, absorbable surgical sutures composed of polydioxanone. The body absorbs these fine suture threads anywhere from four to six months after insertion. Over time, the threads stimulate a healing response for increased collagen production. This new collagen leads to the creation of new structures in the skin for a lifted, tightened effect. The new new “structure” or frame holds for another 12 to 15 months. These sutures are optimal for the face, brow, neck, and jawline with no surgery and minimal discomfort. You can pair NovaThreads with injectables and/or the Silhoutte InstaLift.

What can I expect with NovaThreads?:

During the procedure, the physician threads the sutures beneath the skin, using the string-like devices to pull the skin tight around the affected area. Depending on the thread, the treatment may use “barbs” to grab onto or adhere to the skin, gripping or pulling your underlying tissue and muscles. This insertion triggers a natural healing response, which stimulates collagen production to lift, tighten, or fill lax gaps in sagging skin and restore a more youthful elasticity to the area.

Results may last up to a year. Patients should keep in mind that the skin continues to age with time, which causes a natural decrease in collagen and affects results. You can maintain optimal NovaThreads results with proper at-home skincare and follow-up treatments.

NovaThreads are an excellent treatment option for any area in need of collagen stimulation, particularly portions of the lower face with deep lines or wrinkles. Your physician can determine whether you are a candidate for this treatment.

What areas does NovaThreads treat?:
